OCZ officially launches Octane SSDs

OCZ has finally unveiled its first solid state drives based on the Indilinx Everest platform, the Octane series SSDs. The new Octane Series will include Octane, SATA 6.0Gbps, and Octane-S2, SATA 3.0Gbps, 2.5-inch SSDs.

Previously announced back in July, the Indilinx Everest platform packs a controller with dual-core ARM CPU and features support for TLC NAND, support for 1xnm node NAND flash, support for up 512MB of 400MHz DDR3 DRAM cache and high sequential speeds and high transactional perfromance optimized for 4K to 16K compressed files.

The Octane SSD series is the first solid state drive based on the Indilinx Everest platform that you can actually buy, altough it is not the first drive since LG's P220 ultra-slim notebook had a custom designed one inside. As far as the specs go the Octane and Octane-S2 feature the same dual-core ARM controller and will be available in 128, 256, 512 and 1TB versions. It will also have up to 512MB DRAM cache and low latency of up to 0.06ms for read and 0.09ms for write.

As far as the sequential speeds are concerned, the Octane-S2 will have to satisfy with 275MB/s of read and 265MB/s of write, while the Octane series will be just fine with 560MB/s of read and 400MB/s for write. If you are wondering about transactional perfromance, the Octane-S2 will be pumping out 30k on read 4K IOPS while the Octane is going to hit 45K random read 4K IOPS.

According to OCZ, the new Octane series will hit retail/e-tail on November 1st and although the prices haven't been carved in stone we'll hearing that the Octane SSD series should end up pretty competitive. The rumoured pricing should be somewhere around US $150 for the 120GB one, US$ 290 for 240, US $530 for the 480GB and a tad over US $1000 for the 1TB model.

doubtful. with a decent reserve amount of space and modern protocols to spread the write-load you can write gig's of data every day and it will still last decades.

Some MLC SSDs are notorious for failing and these drives are supposed to rewrite data to each cell 10,000 times TLC has an average of 1000 cell rewrites before failing, pretty risky, TLC is only good for USB stick, phones, MP3/MP4 players, gadgets where files aren't going to be deleted often.

TLC and 1x nm nand? wow, that would be a challenge to the warranty department of ocz :D
