Vita gets day one firmware update

by on19 December 2011

Updates firmware to version 1.50

Sony has already dropped the first official firmware update for the just-released PlayStation Vita. The day one update takes the Vita to version 1.50 when a user connects the device to the Internet.

While Sony is acknowledging the update, there are no details as to what the update does or what changes have been made. We do suspect, however, that similar to the PlayStation 3 Vita, owners should be prepared to receive a lot of firmware updates; as this has seen Sony’s trend of late to deal with its problems.

Analysts that we have spoken with about the Vita seem split as to how successful they think the high-end handheld will be. While Sony upped Japanese shipments to 700K units, analysts remain cautious on how well they think the unit will do outside of Japan. As one prominent analyst told us, “I remain of the opinion that outside of Japan Sony is going to struggle with the Vita, and there just isn’t enough software support for the device out of the gate; and with the success of the iPhone and Android smart phones that have better gaming abilities, users are not going to want to invest in a handheld high-end gaming device.”
