Rockchip to showcase smart watch, glasses at CES

Written by Fudzilla staff

First quad-core A12 coming

Rockchip is not messing around, it is becoming a force to be reckoned with in the mid-range SoC segment and although it is not nearly as big as MediaTek, the company is trying very hard indeed.

According to leaked slides published by 1Pad.com, Rockchip will show off a few new chips at CES, along with smart glasses and a smart watch. The Rockchip smart glass features a 720p display, 5-megapixel camera capable of capturing 1080p video and 4GB of onboard storage. It is powered by a dual-core RK3168 processor clocked at 1.6GHz and it has 1GB of RAM. Not bad for a wearable device.

In addition, Rockchip is apparently working on a smart watch, but details are still sketchy. It is possible that the watch will be rolled out alongside the smart glass, but this is just speculation.

Now for something a bit more interesting. Rockchip will also unveil the new RK3288 SoC at CES and this is a rather interesting piece of silicon. It is a quad-core Cortex A12 chip clocked at up to 1.8GHz. Manufactured in 28nm, this part features a Mali-T628 GPU and 4G LTE connectivity. However, it will be a while before the chip actually ships and it is reportedly set to show up in actual products in the second half of the year.

The Cortex A12 is practically the direct successor to the A9, but it is more efficient and up to 40 percent faster than its predecessor.
