Apple officially announces 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus

With Retina HD screen and 64-bit A8 SoC

The day has finally come and it appears that most rumors were actually spot on as Apple has now officially unveiled two new iPhone smartphones, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

The new displays

Both new iPhones will feature the "Retina HD" display but with slightly different pixel density. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will have a 1334x750 resolution display which adds up to 326ppi while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus will feature 1920x1080 FullHD display which adds up to 401ppi. When compared to the 4-inch iPhone 5S, Apple's previous flagship, the iPhone 6 has 38 percent more pixels while the iPhone 6 Plus has 185 percent more pixels.

According to Apple, these are not only the most beautiful displays on iPhone but aslo the best displays in the industry. Both displays also features an ion-strengthened glass cover and are, according to Apple, the thinnest iPhones ever made. While iPhone 5S was quite thin at 7.6mm, Apple is pushing things further and the new iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick while th iPhone 6 Plus is a bit more chubby at 7.1mm, which still makes it thinner than the iPhone 5S.

The A8 chip

As noted, both the new iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus will be powered by Apple's A8 SoC. The chip itself is built on the 20nm manufacturing process, has 2 billion transistors and it is 13 percent smaller than the Apple's A7 chip. According to Apple the performance is 50 times faster while graphics part is 84 times faster when compared to the original iPhone.

Apple also noted that the A8 chip has up to 25 percent more processing power and it is up to 50 percent faster in graphics tasks compared to the previous generation A7 chip. It is up to 50 percent more efficient. While we still have no details regarding the actual battery, Apple did note that iPhone 6 will be able to last 50 hours of audio playback and 11 hours of WiFi browsing while iPhone 6 Plus, which will most likely have a beefier battery, will be able to do 80 hours of audio playback and 12 hours of WiFi browsing.

Apple has again paired up the new A8 chip with an M8 motion co-processor which will be used by many fitness applications.

Connectivity and cameras

Both new devices will have a new and shiny 802.11ac radio, which should be up to three times faster than the one on iPhone 5S. Both smartphones will also feature 4G LTE connectivity and Apple noted that it will support up to 20 LTE bands and over 200 LTE carriers around the world including all three in China. Both will also support Voice over LTE (voLTE).

The new iPhones will feature pretty much the same camera configuration. Both smartphones will have an 8-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and True Tone flash.

Apple has also added the new iSight sensor with "Focus Pixels" feature, previously found only in professional DSLR cameras, according to Apple, and which should allow it focus much faster and better. It also allows the iPhone to have faster face detection and smile detection. The iPhone 6 will feature digital image stabilisation while the iPhone 6 Plus will feature optical image stabilisation. Both devices will be able to record video in both 30 and 60fps as well as record slow motion video at 120 and 240fps.

Since selfies are a big hit nowadays, Apple also gave the front facing camera a lot of attention. Both devices will feature a new FaceTime HD front camera with an all new sensor and larger f/2.2 aperture which lets in over 80 percent more light. It has burst selfies mode, improved face detection for group selfies and also shoots single HDR photos when it thinks it should.

As expected, both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus will run on Apple's iOS 8 and will be available in black, silver and gold color options.

Availability and price

The new iPhone 6 will cost US $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for 64GB and $399 for the 128GB version, all on a two-year contract. The iPhone 6 Plus will set you back for US $299 for 16GB, $399 for the 64GB and $499 for the 128GB version, also on a two-year contract.

Both smartphones will be available for pre-order as of 12th of September and should be available as of 19th of September.
