Intel Edison coming to Europe

by on09 October 2014

Boards starting at €60

Intel announced the availability of its Edison platform a month ago and now the first products are coming the European retailers.

The Edison features a dual-core Quark SoC, which is basically an ancient Pentium class processors shrunk to 22nm. Edison can run Linux, Arduino and it includes Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. The Intel Edison Breakout Board Kit is listed in Austria for €60+, which is a bit steeper than expected. Last month Intel said Edison products should start at about $50.

An Intel Edison Kit for Arduino is also listed at €89, which makes it feel like an even worse deal.
Edison is a strange beast, an x86 processor in a niche dominated by ARM and RISC chips. There are a number of ARM-based Raspberry Pi boards on the market and they tend to cost quite a bit less, even with modern Cortex A7 dual-cores on board.
