Xbox One outsells PS4 for September

by on15 October 2014

Pachter says free Destiny helped for sure

Wedbush Morgan industry analyst Michael Pachter says that Microsoft sold more Xbox One consoles for the month of September than Sony sold PlayStation 4 consoles at least in the U.S. market space. Pachter’s estimated count is 325,000 for Microsoft and 250,000 for Sony.

As for the reason why, Pachter believes that Microsoft’s promotion which offered a free game with the purchase of every Xbox One console turned the tide. Simply put, getting Destiny for free was better than paying for it according to Pachter.

September was an important time for both console manufactures due to the launch of the highly anticipated Destiny developed for formerly Microsoft owned Bungie. It was Bungie’s first title since Halo and Sony had aligned with Activision for the Destiny launch by offering a $450 console bundle which included the Glacier White PS4 Destiny console bundle for $450, while Microsoft was offering the Madden 15 Xbox One console bundle plus a free game at participating retailers that could be Destiny for only $400.

If the NPD report proves Pachter right and Microsoft did outsell Sony, it will be the first time since both consoles launched last year. It could also be a sign of things to come with Microsoft having some strong exclusive titles going into this holiday season. Sources continue to tell us that they believe that Microsoft will offer a special bundle for the holiday season and that coupled with Halo and Sunset Overdrive may be all the Microsoft needs to turn the holiday sales in their favor.
