Could Battletoads be making a comeback?

by on11 November 2014

Was this Rare’s new pitch to Phil Spencer?

We know that Phil Spencer was going to hear a new project pitch from the folks at Rare. It has been recently discovered by NeoGAF that Microsoft has files a new trademark for “Battletoads”.

The trademark was filed by Microsoft for game software back on November 5th. Rare had originally filed the Battletoads trademark way back in 1990, but according to US Trademark Office documents, it was cancelled back in February of 2002. So Microsoft again filing a trademark for Battletoads is interesting to say the least.

Battletoads was another one of the games that Rare was be known to have developed. The Battletoads were first to arrive on the NES way back in 1991 and a title that was developed to compete with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that were very popular at the time. The game spawned a number of ports and other games in the franchise for a number of platforms.

Phil Spencer from Microsoft has expressed his very positive memories of Battletoads, but that does not mean anything. He has asked fans what franchise or game Rare should work on next, but again that does not mean anything either.

Still the possibility does exist that Rare might try to get some of its mojo back with a new Battletoads title and if done right, we suspect that it could be popular. Stay tuned.
