LG has announced that it will be unveiling a range of 4K Ultra HD TV sets utilising quantum dot LCD technology at CES 2015. It did not explain if it was going to get Schrödinger's cat to chase the dot, or if the television would not work if it was not being observed.
LG has been doing well with OLED TV production, but it seems the company wants to get into the more advanced LCD options next year. It said that the quantum dot TVs "will be available in 2015 to complement LG’s other ULTRA HD TV and OLED TV offering.
Quantum dot technology offers more colours and a better colour saturation than regular LCD panels. It does so by "harnessing nano crystals that range in size from 2 to 10 nanometers." Each tiny quantum dot emits a different colour depending on its size and means you don’t need white LEDs.
Samsung has announced this year that it will be holding off on OLED TV development, which many felt would be the next big thing in TV technology, going into 2015. Instead, it too will turn to quantum dot LCD technology.
