The European Commission will spend $212.16 million
to research on counterterrorism technologies.
The money will be
spent to develop technologies and knowledge to mitigate threats including
terrorism ,
organised crime and natural disasters.
There are 44 research projects
being financed by the grants including automatic surveillance systems for
water distribution systems.
Another area being investigated is the
development of a European ballistic database, which will analyse and store
firearms information and allow sharing of information among European police
forces, here.
If
the development work proves successful, then the projects will get contracts
with the Commission.
More than 400 companies, universities and public
bodies are involved, including organizations from European Union member
states, the United States, Norway, Turkey and Israel, the Commission said in a statement.
