Silicon Saxony needs a break
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said politicians should consider aiding
Qimonda and other chipmakers based in Germany, in order to assure their
survival during the economic crisis.
"With Qimonda, politicians are definitely called upon, in conjunction with
AMD, Qimonda, Infineon - these are all difficult cases, and
this is the sole cluster of chipmakers in Europe - perhaps to take care of them
in such a way that allows for (their) survival..." said Merkel at a German industry conference.
However, Infineon CEO Peter Bauer claims the company is doing quite
well, and that liquidity is not an issue. Qimonda, which filed for
bankruptcy protection back in January, is an entirely different story.
