Samsung hopes to sell 390 million smartphones this year

by on02 January 2013

Optimistic to say the least

According to the Korea Times, Samsung is planning to ship about 510 million phones in 2013, up from 420 million last year.

Of course, not all will be smartphones. Samsung believes 120 million will be feature phones, while a smartphones will account for a whopping 390 million units. What’s more, Samsung is not solely focusing on Andrpid. Windows Phone 8 and Tizen devices are also in the mix.

However, it is still unclear how many WP8 and Tizen devices Samsung hopes to sell. They will probably be dwarfed by Android shipments, but Samsung wouldn’t be wasting time on alternative platforms for no reason. WP8 is becoming an increasingly interesting alternative for users fed up with Android fragmentation and update issues.

Samsung is also investing heavily in new manufacturing sites. It is throwing $2.2 billion at its plants in Vietnam, while at the same time relying on facilities in China, Korea and India.
