Ubisoft dumps silly DRM

by on13 August 2010

Going for Steamworks
After users threatened to leave its games in droves Ubisoft has finally caved in and dropped their horrible always-online DRM scheme for the upcoming PC version of the strategy game R.U.S.E.

The old DRM was daft and requied you to be online always while playing even singleplayer games like Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed 2. The official statement is that when R.U.S.E. is released in September, it “will benefit” from Valve’s Steamworks API.

A Steam account and Internet connection will be required to activate the game, as per Steam policy however R.U.S.E. will not use the Ubisoft protection. This means that single player games can be played offline. Of course this is just for the PC, but it is a start and no doubt be a great relief for players. Of course not having DRM would be even better.
