OpenSim developers want to avoid patent trolls

Thinking of changing the licence

OpenSim developers trying to come up with ways of killing off patent trolls which would kill off their project.

The Overte Foundation, which holds the OpenSim licenses, recently released a contributors’ license agreement for its developers. The thought is that a good anti-troll protection measure would be to change the agreement so that if someone sues an OpenSim developer they will lose the right to use the OpenSim code.

OpenSim core developer Crista Lopes, inventor of the hypergrid and treasurer of the Overte Foundation, said that the foundation’s legal counsel was looking seriously at the idea. She told Hypergrid Business that developers hated patent trolls and was looking at what other open source projects are doing to combat them.

The idea comes from Ilan Tocher, CEO of Kitely Ltd. told Hypergrid Business he said that the change should help protect the community by ensuring that they retain the right to counter sue the people who make patent threats against the community. Many of the big open source projects include this and OpenSim does not.
