Xbox One has sold 2 million units

by on12 December 2013

Just took 18 days for Microsoft

After Sony took a victory lap by announcing that it was able to sell 2.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide, now it is Microsoft’s turn to celebrate.

By the numbers, the two companies have confirmed to moving 4.1 million consoles combined. What that translates into is Sony selling 2.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in 17 days in 32 countries. Microsoft on the other hand launched a week later and sold 2 million consoles in 18 days in 13 countries.

You will have to be the judge on which number is more impressive, but from where we sit Microsoft seems to have the better bragging rights as it launched a week later in fewer countries and was able to just about equal Sony’s sales in one extra day. Still the real truth is that we don’t think the bragging matter, but the fact is that 4.1 million next generation consoles have been sold and the adoption rate of the next generation consoles from both vendors is far ahead of the systems from the previous generation.

Like the publishers and developers, we will be watching with great interest to see what the sales numbers end up being for both consoles by the end of the holiday season. If sales continue at this pace we have to think questions will start being raised about the cost and viability of supporting two gaming ecosystems and the need to focus just on the next generation consoles. We are not there yet, but we are already seeing differences between the versions of titles offered for the older consoles and the next generation consoles.
