VAIO shall return

VAIO is planning a comeback on the world market after concentrating on Japan while it reformed itself.

VAIO was part of Sony and was sold to the investment outfit Japan Industrial Partners in February 2014 as part of a restructuring of the corporation to focus on mobile devices.

Since then not much has been seen outside Japan. Even in Japan, Vaio's market share has fallen to less than 1 per cent, according to research firm Euromonitor.

Now that is set to change as VAIO CEO Yoshimi Ota plans to launch new products in the US, VAIO will also look into a slimmer laptop with mobile support, as well as wearable gadgets and even factory robots.

The VAIO Z Canvas PC, a 12.2-inch notebook, will be made available at some Microsoft Stores this October with pricing expected to start at $2,200, Chief Executive Yoshimi Ota said in an interview. The company also plans a move into Brazil later although he didn't say anything about Europe.

While it is nice to see an old brand resurrected, the outfit has mountains to climb and it will need a lot more than a popular brand name to sell in this market.
