Microsoft claims it is not auto upgrading Windows 10

The system has not gone rogue

Microsoft has been getting a lot of stick for annoying its existing Windows users with upgrade requires for Windows 10. But some users have been complaining that the OS has gone rogue and started updating itself.

Over the weekend users started complaining that Windows 10 installed without user intervention, which is something that clearly was not supposed to happen.

However the spinners in Redmond have issued a statement claiming that it is nothing to do with them.

“We shared in late October on the Windows Blog, we are committed to making it easy for our Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers to upgrade to Windows 10. As stated in that post, we have updated the upgrade experience to make it easier for customers to schedule a time for their upgrade to take place. Customers continue to be fully in control of their devices, and can choose to not install the Windows 10 upgrade or remove the upgrade from Windows Update (WU) by changing the WU settings.”

But how does that explain how users are reporting the Windows 10 has forcefully taken over their machines. One reddit thread has more than 3,000 comments and users are still venting their spleen.

It becomes a little more difficult for Microsoft when writers, such as Kotaku’s Patrick Klepek had his Windows 7 machine upgraded to Windows 10. It was a little spooky as he had planned to stop being an old dinosaur and upgrade to Windows 10 last week.  His computer must have heard him.

“I didn’t expect to wake up on Thursday morning and find out Windows had taken care of that for me. Maybe I forgot to push back the upgrade schedule, maybe I accidentally scheduled it by clicking the wrong button. Whatever the case, I definitely did not intend to install Windows 10.”
