AMD said its EPYC chips were selected by the social media giant Meta (formerly known as Facebook) to help power its data centres at its virtual Accelerated Data Centre Premiere event.

AMD explained the two companies worked together to develop a high-performance, power-efficient processor based on the company's 3rd Generation EPYC processor.

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su said on Yahoo Finance Live that adding Meta is certainly a very significant piece. In fact the sharemarket agreed as shares of AMD shot higher by 10 per cent in afternoon trading.

The outfit is doing well on the share market and increased 65 per cent year to date as it takes market share from Intel which has been lagging behind at a miserable two per cent. This state of affairs is not expected to last and Intel shares are being held up as long term investors bank on a comeback.

The high-profile win accompanied several announcements from AMD, including some specifics around upcoming EPYC processors codenamed “Genoa” and “Bergamo.” AMD dubbed the Genoa processor as the "world’s highest performance processor for general purpose computing."

Su told Yahoo Finance Live we are living through a high-performance computing "megacycle" that shows no signs of slowing down.
