Step aside HP, coming through

Last October Acer managed to overtake Dell and become the world's second largest PC maker and it's showing no signs of slowing down.

Acer currently holds a 13 percent global market share and trails Hewlett Packart, with a 19.3 percent share. However, according to Taiwan's Economic Daily, the outfit is planning to catch up with HP by 2012.

The daily cited Acer Chairman Wang Jeng-Tang and President Gianfranco Lanci, so this is not an analyst forecast or punter dribble. Lanci and Jeng-Tang mean business and so far they've kept their promises of seemingly overly optimistic growth.

Mind you, catching up with HP in the space of just two years won't be easy, as Acer will have to increase its market share by more than fifty percent. Alternatively, it can let HP make a mess of things and shoot itself in the foot. It wouldn't be the first time.
