Keys being sold for $300+ on eBay

It seems that everyone is trying to make a buck these days and if there is a play to be made by the scalpers, they will make it. The latest thing we have seen are scalpers preying on those unlucky individuals who didn’t make it into the StarCraft 2 closed beta.

Blizzard has distributed a number of keys for the closed beta, but according to what we have been able to learn, there are no more keys being given out at this time. This means if you were not lucky enough to get into the beta, then you have to ask yourself how much you are willing to pay to get an early look at StarCraft 2.

The answer is quite simple, actually, because a number of people (who we are calling scalpers) have decided that they are not going to participate and instead will sell their closed beta keys to the highest bidders on eBay. We have seen those that are sold at auction going for over $300+ per key, with some “buy-it” keys for software over $450, and additional crazy deals that include the closed beta key and more.

We have to tell you that we think paying $300+ for an electronic key code that might not work and becoming the victim of a scam isn’t a good idea. While it is possible that people are on the level, we have to wonder how many of these auctions are not on the level and/or that don’t actually have the closed beta keys they are claiming to be selling. Our advice is to simply wait. It just isn’t worth the risk in acquiring a key this way; and if you decide to take the risk, we wish you the best of luck.
