Xbox Live profile hacked!

Seems to be a targeted and isolated attack

While hacking isn’t a new thing and social engineering is the most common ways to get hacked these days, it actually comes as no surprise that Xbox Live’s Major Nelson, who is better known as Larry Hryb, had his Xbox Live profile hacked. Initial reports suggested at first that it was some sort of a security exploit; it would appear from what our sources are telling us now that it is most likely an isolated and targeted attack. It seems that all the hacker accomplished was to change data that appeared in his profile and he did change it a couple of times, including adding some nasty language in it.

The Web site lightzz.com is claiming responsibility for this, and Roid-Monkey is claiming that he could hack any Xbox Live profile for $60 USD transmitted to him via PayPal. Microsoft has not officially commented on how vulnerable users’ Xbox Live profiles may or may not be. One thing is for sure is that you should have a good long secure password on your Windows Live ID that is tied to your Xbox Live profile.

From what we hear, Director of Policy and Enforcement for Xbox Live, better known as Stephen Toulouse, said via Twitter that the hack was “very specific” and “very targeted” and they will continue to investigate. Hryb has control of his account again and at this point that is what matters. Let’s hope that this does not turn out to be a widespread problem.
