Those that violate will be dealt with

After dropping the ban hammer last week, Blizzard has also been doing some legal maneuvering to deal with those hackers that were allegedly trying to build a way to allow StarCraft II to be played on non-Battle.net servers. Blizzard uses battle.net to not only prevent piracy, but to protect the integrity of the actual game to curb the potential for cheating.

According to sources, Blizzard apparently went after a group calling themselves “StarCrack” who were behind the effort to find a way to play the game without using Battle.net by using independent servers. Apparently, the suit was dropped about a week later.

Blizzard has stated in their beta test agreement that circumventing the anti-piracy measures that they have in place with Battle.net is a violation of the beta test agreement and terms of use. This isn’t the first time that Blizzard has dealt with the issue of Battle.net emulation and has taken action in the past against those running unauthorized and illegal servers.

The decision by Blizzard to go after those who would attempt to emulate Battle.net is a necessary thing for Blizzard to do, since the game itself is tied to the online service, and by doing so the company is able to limit piracy of the game. From what we hear, Blizzard is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to go after violators.
