Amazon said to be working on smartphone

by on06 July 2012

Foxconn to build it, Android to power it

First it was Facebook, then it was Microsoft and now it is apparently Amazon’s turn to hit the rumour mill.

Bloomberg is reporting that Amazon is developing a smartphone that could go up against Apple’s iPhone and the Android gang. Foxconn has been tapped for production and the Kindle-phone is said to be based on a tweaked version of Android, much like the company’s Kindle Fire tablet.

As far back as November, Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney said the company would enter the smartphone race. Now Bloomberg has learned that Foxconn is helping Amazon develop the device and that Amazon is rushing to acquire wireless technology patents and defend itself from infringement allegations.

Facebook and Microsoft phone rumours did not pan out, but we would at least like to believe that an Amazon phone is on the way. With a huge content library behind it and new Kindle tablets on the way, it help Amazon further expand its toehold in the market.
