Affordable Huawei Honor Holly coming to Europe

by on24 February 2015

Moto G killer

The Huawei Honor Holly is coming to Europe next month and early listings suggest it will be priced at £74.99 in the UK, down from the recommended retail price of £109.99.

This would make it substantially cheaper than competing phones, namely the Moto G. You can pre-order it on Amazon but what do you get for 75 quid? Quite a lot actually – the Honor Holly has a 5-inch 720p screen, MediaTek MT6582 quad-core Cortex-A7 processor, 1GB of RAM and a generous 16GB of storage, expandable via a microSD slot.

The phone has an 8-megapixel camera and a 2-megapixel front snapper. There’s no 4G, but dual-SIM is a redeeming feature in this price segment. The phone ships with Android 4.4.2, with EMUI 2.3 customisations on top. The 2000mAh battery is not bad, either, given the price and spec.

Huawei appears to be going back to its roots with the latest Honor models. The Honor 6 is a plastic powerhouse at a very fair price, while the Honor Holly has a decent spec at a spectacular price – as it ends up significantly cheaper than the Moto G, and marginally cheaper than Sony’s new Xperia E4, which has an inferior spec.

The only thing we don’t like is the name. If you’re buying your phone for your teen, a Moto or Xperia sound a bit better than a “Holly”.

There’s a caveat about the price, too. We are not sure what the retail price will be once it actually starts shipping in other European markets, but initial listings look promising. Like we said, 2015 may be the year of commoditised Android phones, and so far we like what we're seeing.
