Tensor G3, ultrawide camera, starting at $699 and $999

After an endless stream of teasers and leaks, Google has now officially announced its new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, equipping them with the new 4nm Tensor G3 SoC, dual and triple-camera systems, and $699 and $999 price tags.

In terms of design, Google did not change much, and you'll get 6.2-inch or 6.7-inch smartphones with glass front, glass back and aluminum frame, recognizable rear camera system, center placed front camera, IP68 rating, 120Hz OLED screens, decent battery, and wired and wireless charging.

4nm Tensor G3 chipset

The star of the show was the Samsung fabbed 4nm Tensor G3 SoC, which comes in both the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro. This is a 9-core SoC with a single Cortex-X3 prime core, four Cortex-A715 cores, and four Cortex-A510 cores. It has the Immortalis G715s 10-core GPU and comes paired up with 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of UFS 3.1 storage.

The bigger Pixel 8 Pro

The flagship Pixel 8 Pro measures 162.6x76.5x8.8mm and weighs 213g. It comes with a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED 120Hz 2992x1344 resolution screen with 2400nits peak brightness, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back. The Tensor G3 SoC will be paired with 12GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Google has updated the camera system so you get a 50MP 1.2µm main sensor behind a 25mm wide lens with multi-directional PDAF, Laser AF, and OIS. It is backed up by a 48MP 0.7µm sensor behind a 113mm telephoto lens with dual pixel PDAF, OIS and 5x optical zoom. The third one is the 48MP 0.8µm sensor behind a 126-degree ultrawide lens with dual pixel PDAF. The front camera is a 10.5MP 1.22µm one with a 20mm ultrawide f/2.2 lens.

The Pixel 8 Pro is a proper flagship with stereo speakers, all the usual high-end connectivity, an under-display optical fingerprint sensor, UWB support, and more. It has a 5,050mAh battery with 30W wired and 23W wireless charging.

The Pixel 8 for the masses

The smaller Pixel 8 measures 150.5x70.8x8.9 mm and weighs 187g. Although it is lighter than the bigger Pixel 8 Pro, surprisingly, it is thicker, despite its smaller 6.2-inch size. The 6.2-inch screen is an OLED 120Hz one with 2400x1080 resolution, and 2000nits peak brightness. It uses older Gorilla Glass Victus protection. The Tensor G3 SoC is paired up with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

The Pixel 8 sticks to a dual camera system with the same main 50MP 1/1.31"/1.2µm sensor behind 25mm lens with PDAF, Laser AF, and OIS. It lacks the 48MP telephoto one but comes with a 12MP 1/2.9"/1.25µm sensor behind an ultrawide f/2.2 126-degree lens. It also has the same 10.5MP 1.22µm sensor front camera with 20mm ultrawide f/2.2 lens.

The Pixel 8 also lacks the thermometer sensor, UWB support and has a smaller 4,575mAh battery with 27W wired and 18W wireless charging.
