US president Donald Trump has parked a AI security order after deciding it might annoy the money-printing machine.
Trump delayed signing an executive order that would allow the government to evaluate AI models before they reach the public.
“I didn’t like certain aspects of it. We’re leading China, we’re leading everybody, and I don’t want to do anything that’s going to get in the way of that leading,” Trump said.
According to Reuters the less official reason was rather more Washington. Several reports said not enough tech chief executives could get to Washington at short notice. Apparently, an executive order without a room full of grinning tech bosses and cameras is just paperwork.
The planned order would have directed the Office of the National Cyber Director and other agencies to develop a process to check AI models for security before release.
That came after concerns about Anthropic’s Mythos and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 Cyber, both of which can quickly identify and exploit security vulnerabilities.
CNN said one sticking point was proposed language requiring AI companies to share advanced models with the government 14 to 90 days before launch.
Trump said he worried the order’s wording “could have been a blocker.”
