Steam heads for its first $20 billion year

Valve’s Steam platform is on course to generate more than $20 billion in gross revenue during 2026 after another record quarter.

According to TechSpot, figures from Alinea Analytics estimate Steam generated about $5.5 billion during the third quarter, up 12 per cent compared with the same period last year.

September alone produced around $1.7 billion in gross revenue, up 13 per cent from the previous September record. Steam now needs roughly another $3.5 billion during the fourth quarter to push annual gross revenue past $20 billion for the first time.

That target looks comfortably within reach given the strength of holiday sales and the platform’s usual year-end spending surge.

The figures cover gross consumer spending through Steam, so they should not be confused with Valve’s own revenue after developer payments, taxes and other costs. Valve typically takes a 30 per cent cut from game sales, although that percentage falls for titles generating more than $10 million and again above $50 million. Its scale means even a reduced percentage produces numbers capable of making ordinary retailers develop a nervous twitch.

Alinea estimates free-to-play titles generated almost $168 million on Steam in September, despite no major new free-to-play release that month.

That money largely came from in-game purchases, downloadable content and other spending from users who had already acquired the games without paying an entry price.

Steam’s growth continues despite competition from Epic Games Store, Microsoft, publishers running their own launchers and subscription services trying to persuade players that ownership is terribly old-fashioned.

Valve has benefited from the continued expansion of PC gaming and from publishers increasingly treating Steam as the default distribution platform. The company has widened its hardware ambitions, with Steam Deck, SteamOS, and its planned Steam Frame helping tie more devices into the Steam ecosystem.
