TP-Link waves billion-dollar offer at US router ban

TP-Link is considering nearly $1 billion in U.S. investment as it seeks permission to sell new routers despite Washington’s restrictions on foreign-made equipment.

According to PCMag, the company has proposed assembling Wi-Fi 8 devices in the US as soon as next year. The investment remains a proposal tied to its regulatory approval campaign, with no factory opening announced.

“TP-Link would begin assembling these Wi-Fi 8 devices in the United States by next year,” the company told the FCC. That timetable depends on receiving an exemption from the foreign router ban.

The Verge points out that Netgear and Asus received exemptions without promising American router production, despite manufacturing commitments appearing in the FCC’s paperwork. TP-Link is offering considerably more expensive reassurance.

The restrictions affect authorisation of new foreign-produced consumer routers, leaving TP-Link’s forthcoming models dependent on regulatory clearance. The company has said its existing products remain available for sale in America.

TP-Link has already opened regional pre-orders for its Archer 8 Ultra, but excluded the US from the initial launch markets. The regulatory obstacle therefore has immediate consequences for its next-generation networking hardware.

The company’s Wi-Fi 8 range uses chipsets from Broadcom, Qualcomm and MediaTek, paired with what TP-Link describes as US-led hardware and software engineering. Its flagship products include the Archer 8 Ultra router and Deco 8 Ultra mesh system.

Wi-Fi 8 focuses on steadier connections, better performance amid interference, and more reliable operation as devices move between access points. The emerging IEEE 802.11bn specification remains under development, giving regulators and engineers separate opportunities to delay everyone’s shopping.

TP-Link says regional availability and final specifications will vary by market, with further details announced closer to launch. American availability still depends on the company getting the necessary approval.
