AMD sneaks in more RDNA 4m iGPU targets

AMD has slipped two more GPU targets into the Linux toolchain without much fuss.

Phoronix has spotted fresh compiler patches that add GFX1171 and GFX1172 under the RDNA 4m label, extending the earlier discovery of GFX1170.

Earlier changes suggested RDNA 4m brings RDNA 4-style instruction upgrades, including FP8 and BF8 support, plus WMMA matrix instructions aimed at AI workloads. Phoronix spotted the new identifiers in LLVM updates within AMD’s open-source graphics stack, and both targets expose the same instruction-set capabilities.

The RDNA 4m naming is telling, as AMD has kept RDNA 4 for discrete GPUs, not for upcoming SoCs. RDNA 4m sits in the GFX11 family, linked to RDNA 3, and Linux documentation previously flagged the GFX1170 as an APU- or SoC-class GPU rather than a discrete Radeon part.

That points to the GFX1170 family appearing in Zen 6-based Medusa Point APUs, with RDNA 4m serving as a stepping stone between RDNA 3.5 and RDNA 4. Medusa Point is expected to follow Zen 5 Strix Point chips with RDNA 3.5 iGPUs, while a bigger graphics jump is expected with Medusa Halo.

Medusa Halo is tipped to bring RDNA 5 graphics and next-gen LPDDR6 support, which is where AMD looks more likely to do the proper generational flex.
