Apple’s “AI miracle” propped up by Google and Nvidia

The Fruity Cargo Cult Apple has built an AI stack so independent it needs Google, Nvidia and Chipzilla to stop it falling over.

Apple used WWDC 2026 to show off a sprawling compute architecture that answered some questions and sprayed fresh fog over the rest. The company has since been issuing clarifications on its coming AI products at panic speed, which is always reassuring from an outfit that insists it has everything under control.

At the centre of the show is Apple Intelligence, a mix of on-device models and cloud models with the usual Cupertino privacy incense wafting over it.

Job’s Mob now says its big cloud-based Apple Foundation Model, AFM 3 Cloud Pro, is its own creation. The tiny footnote is that AFM 3 Cloud Pro was distilled from an equivalent Google Gemini model, because apparently independence now comes with a Mountain View starter kit.

Job’s Mob had already licensed a 1.2 trillion-parameter Gemini model from Google a few months ago. The company says it only used Google’s technology for model distillation and did its own pre-training and post-training work.

That is a bit like copying the clever kid’s homework, changing the handwriting and then holding a press conference about your stationery. Given how far Apple has fallen behind on AI, many of its fans in the Tame Apple Press will be at least happy that it has pulled finger and got a product out.

Apple’s Private Cloud Compute gets even funnier, because the AFM Cloud is hosted in Google Cloud.

Job’s Mob says the set-up has “the industry’s most comprehensive transparency guarantees that allow external security researchers to verify our privacy commitments”.

The new Google Cloud version of PCC uses “NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX, and Google’s Titan chip”.

So the great Apple AI fortress appears to involve Google’s cloud, Nvidia’s GPUs, Chipzilla’s CPUs and Google’s security silicon.

Job’s Mob says it will fight supply chain attacks with “a cryptographically verifiable, append-only ledger of all Google Cloud hardware that is part of the PCC fleet”. It says PCC on Google Cloud uses the same security patterns as PCC on Apple silicon, including isolated parsing, short-lived inference software and attested keys.

The company will provide “public research tooling, and access to live PCC nodes in research mode through the Apple Security Bounty Program”.

Its cloud models now come in three flavours, because nothing says clarity like adding more labels to the fog machine. AFM 3 Cloud Pro runs on Nvidia GPUs inside Google Cloud.

The plainer AFM 3 Cloud and ADM 3 Cloud Image run on Job’s Mob’s own servers. On device, AFM 3 Core Advanced has 20 billion parameters but only wakes up between one billion and four billion for a given request.

Job’s Mob says the model was entirely designed by Apple and needs the A19 Pro chip to run on an iPhone.

“Instead of forcing the entire model into DRAM, the full model is stored in flash memory (NAND). Because NAND-to-DRAM bandwidth is too slow to swap weights token by token, as standard MoE models require, AFM 3 Core Advanced makes routing decisions per prompt.”

The company added: “Rather than using a single model for all tasks or managing an ensemble of smaller models, AFM 3 Core Advanced uses a predetermined number of active parameters tailored to each specific use case.”

Older iPhones get the diet version, AFM 3 Core, with three billion parameters for general inferencing. All Apple models were trained on TPUs, and all except AFM 3 Cloud Pro run on Apple silicon.

When a user asks Siri AI something, a local orchestrator calls the tools, gathers data and builds the prompt for AFM Cloud.Job’s Mob says raw data is not sent to the cloud, only the structured prompt, which is meant to keep the privacy halo polished.

During the technical presentation, the company worked hard to downplay Google’s role in Apple Intelligence and Private Cloud Compute. It said it uses neither the models nor the infrastructure Google deploys for its own customers.

That may be technically true, but the optics are still glorious. After years of telling the faithful that vertical integration was the path to salvation, Job’s Mob has built an AI cathedral with rented scaffolding.
