The Fruity Cargo Cult Apple may have plenty of A20 Pro chips, but not enough memory to finish the job.
The dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell-on-earth yarn claiming that TSMC is sitting on about $1 billion worth of A20 Pro units which have nowhere to go. The problem is not the Taiwanese chip foundry, but the DRAM supply needed before the parts can move to the next stage.
Job’s Mob normally leans on TSMC to crank out millions of chipsets before its September iPhone circus. This year looks messier, with memory makers distracted by AI customers waving bigger cheques.
TSMC is on course to hit 100,000 monthly 2nm wafers before 2026 is done. That sounds impressive, but wafer output is not much use when the memory cupboard is looking bare.
The A20 Pro is expected to use TSMC’s 2nm process and Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module Packaging at Fab 3 in Longtan. That packaging shift makes DRAM supply rather more important than the usual component bun fight.
Job’s Mob usually has new SoCs in mass production during July or August, giving it breathing room before iPhone pre-orders. This time, the report claims about $1 billion worth of A20 Pro silicon is waiting around for enough DRAM to turn up.
The outfit has tried the usual supply-chain arm-twisting. It has been negotiating with existing suppliers and poking around Chinese manufacturer CXMT for cheaper shipments. That has not worked. Job’s Mob may now have to pay the premium and hope TSMC can push the A20 Pro parts through the next stage.
AI buyers are making the squeeze worse by piling into LPDDR5X RAM, prized for low power use and fat bandwidth. For once, Job’s Mob is stuck in the queue with everyone else rather than gliding past the velvet rope.
The shortage could delay the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. It has already caused ripples elsewhere, with MacBook Air shipments reportedly pushed out until September as final iPhone production in China waits for the memory racket to calm down.
