Bluesky’s mobile app has shed more than half its users since late 2024, while Threads keeps hoovering up the crowd.
According to Similarweb data, Bluesky had 10.4 million monthly active mobile users worldwide in June 2026, down 27.2 per cent year on year.
Its daily active mobile users kept sliding in July, falling 25.6 per cent year on year to about 3 million. The app has now lost more than half its monthly active users from its late 2024 peak, which is a bit awkward for the decentralised dream.
Similarweb reckons Bluesky averaged about 22.1 million monthly active users in the fourth quarter of 2024. By the second quarter of 2026, that had fallen to 10.7 million, a drop of about 52 per cent.
Still, the people left behind seem fairly committed, which is more than can be said for plenty of social media tourists. Bluesky’s stickiness rate, the ratio of daily to monthly active users, sat at roughly 29 per cent in June.
That was about the same as Threads, despite Bluesky’s smaller crowd and thinner mainstream pull. For Bluesky chief executive Toni Schneider, the numbers may not be quite as grim as they look.
The outfit is not just trying to make Bluesky the app win, but wants its AT Proto plumbing to power other social services. That is already happening through projects such as BlackSky and Eurosky, while video-focused AT Proto app Skylight has found early traction.
Bluesky has rolled out newer products, including AI-powered research tool Attie, and is working on support for private data. That could attract users less interested in the public square and more keen on private networking and communities.
Threads, however, is not politely waiting for Bluesky to sort out its federation gospel. In July 2026, Threads daily active users were up 21.3 per cent year on year to 147 million. Website visits to Threads were up 112 per cent year on year to 471.6 million.
Threads now appears to have roughly 66 per cent more monthly active users than X, which gives Meta another smug dashboard to stare at.
