ChatGPT listens while it talks

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-Live, a new full-duplex voice mode for ChatGPT that can listen and speak simultaneously.

According to PC World, the move should make voice chats less clunky than the usual AI assistant routine, where everything sounds like two confused call-centre bots waiting for permission to speak.

Until now, voice modes for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have had to take turns listening and talking. That made for jerky conversations, long monologues and sudden interruptions.

Some AI startups have already shown more natural voice systems, including models that can listen while talking. Now OpenAI is shoving the same trick into ChatGPT.

GPT-Live is rolling out to ChatGPT users. Its main selling point is a full-duplex architecture, which lets the model listen and talk at once.

Older ChatGPT voice modes were turn-based, like grotty old CB radios.

“That means when I talk, you listen — “Hey, good buddy, what’s your 20? Over” — and when you talk, I listen — “I’m at Dunkin Donuts on I-5, over.””

GPT-Live comes in two flavours, GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini. It works more like a standard phone call, where users can interrupt or talk over the system without everything falling to bits.

Because it “continuously processes input while generating output,” GPT-Live should be better at deciding when to talk, when to interrupt and when to shut up.

The system can deploy agents to run web searches while it is still talking. That should bin the awkward “searching the web” pauses that made the old ChatGPT voice mode feel like it had wandered off for a sandwich.

OpenAI is not the first through the door with full-duplex voice. AI voice outfit Thinking Machines has demoed voice “interaction” models that can listen while speaking.

Sesame AI has shown a voice mode that can send out search agents while it continues talking, which sounds useful until the thing decides it has opinions.

For most users, GPT-Live may be the first proper go at full-duplex AI voice chat. GPT-Live is rolling out to all ChatGPT users from 8 July 2026, including free accounts.
