On select motherboards
Motherboard maker Gigabyte is rolling out a new firmware update to enable Thunderbolt 3 support on select motherboards.
Gigabyte’s GA-Z170X-Gaming G1, GA-Z170X-Gaming GT, and GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 motherboards have received Thunderbolt 3 certification from Intel.
In the past, these boards were limited to Thunderbolt 2 and could do just 20 Gb/s bandwidth with the wind behind it and going downhill.
After the new firmware update, these motherboards will be capable of delivering the full 40 Gb/s bandwidth offered by the Thunderbolt 3.
Thunderbolt 3 is available over the USB Type-C connector on Gigabyte’s motherboards and comes with support for DisplayPort 1.2 which can run 4K monitors at 60 fps.
