A Back to the Future hoverboard has been given the Kickstarter treatment, but it will be a long time before a kid will be allowed to play with one.
The Hendo hoverboard is the real deal and can be yours for $10,000. It uses the same electromagnetic tech that buildings use to separate from the ground to withstand earthquakes. It levitates about an inch off the ground and its loud, can’t carry a huge load. You can only skate for about seven minutes.
The company behind it hopes to make a whisper-quiet solid state version in the future. Unlike the Back to the Future model it can’t hover over any surface – you’ll need to ride over conductive materials that serve as a secondary magnetic field. It is being tested on a copper floored skatepark.
The company is seeking $250,000 to make the hoverboard a reality. It’s also offering its Whitebox developer kit, so you can use the hovering tech in any application you like.
