Huawei is waving a 90:1 compression card at storage buyers, claiming its OceanProtect gear can crush bloated backups.
The card is built for Huawei’s all-flash OceanProtect Backup Storage systems, including the newly announced X8100 and X9100 boxes.
Huawei says the largest volumes come from highly repetitive backup data, such as daily full virtual machine backups that pile up over time.
The company claims the result is 20 per cent better than the leading enterprise storage alternative, which is fighting talk with a spreadsheet attached.
According to TechRadar the secret sauce is Huawei’s patented HZU algorithm family, which uses fast nonlinear transformation and lightweight context prediction.
That is a fancier route than old-school compression tricks, with Huawei claiming it can achieve roughly 30 per cent higher compression ratios under comparable conditions.
All-flash backup is not cheap, especially when vendors stuff systems with SSDs instead of slower spinning rust.
Huawei says the compression card helps squeeze more useful capacity from the same drives. Whether anyone gets near 90:1 will depend on the data, the backup policy, and the extent of redundancy in the customer’s estate.
