Software King of the World Microsoft made a huge mistake when it tried to ban the word “Microslop” from its Copilot Discord server.
For those not in the know, there is an internet trend in which someone rushes to point out that AI has been used to create an item or piece of information. All the user needs to do is write the word “AI slop” in the comments and then pat themselves on the back, thinking they are clever and original. However, on the Copilot Discord server someone had been a little more clever and invented the term “Microslop.”
Windows Latest reported that the server began auto-blocking the term, with any message containing it stopped from posting, and a moderation notice was shown to the sender.
Windows Latest said: “Windows Latest found that sending a message with the word “Microslop” inside the official Copilot Discord server immediately triggers an automated moderation response. The message does not appear publicly in the channel, and instead, only the sender sees the notice stating that the content is blocked by the server because it contains a phrase deemed inappropriate.”
Once that hit X, users did what users do and started poking the fence, swapping letters to sneak past the keyword filter with variants like “Microsl0p”.
The server’s filter was not exactly a genius, so the cat-and-mouse bit kicked off, and people began posting workarounds as fast as moderators could play whack-a-mole.
What started as a simple word block then spiralled into deliberate testing, with some accounts reportedly losing messaging rights after posting “Microslop”.
Soon after, access to parts of the server was restricted, message history was hidden and posting permissions were disabled for plenty of users.
The end result is that more people are aware of the world Microslop than would have been if Vole had not tried to ban it.
