Next-gen console timing meets publisher shrug

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is not worried that Sony and Microsoft might slip their next boxes past the expected late 2027 window.

In January, MST International analyst David Gibson said PlayStation 6 could be delayed longer than many expected, blaming an ongoing memory and storage crisis.

In February, Bloomberg reported Sony is weighing a PS6 delay to 2028 or even 2029, which is the sort of rumour that keeps forum threads alive for weeks.

There has been no chatter about Microsoft’s Xbox Next, codenamed Project Helix, but GDC’s confirmation of alpha dev kits in 2027 has spooked some fans.

But Zelnick is not buying the panic, even with component pricing and availability still being a running headache.

“We don’t see it affecting the delivery of consoles to the market.”

That is a short line, but it lands differently when it comes from the boss of a publisher that will want to know exactly when the next hardware cycle starts printing money.

The piece notes that Take-Two could soon become the largest publicly traded US third-party publisher if EA’s announced $55 billion buyout by a consortium clears regulatory approval.

If Zelnick’s this relaxed, either the console timelines are firmer than the rumour mill claims or everyone has just decided to pretend shortages are somebody else’s problem.
