A new report claims Samsung Foundry is gearing up to restart 8nm production for Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060, putting the old card back on shelves.
The consumer GPU market has been lurching about during the past few months thanks to DRAM shortages. Launch plans have shifted, retail supply has got worse, and Nvidia is juggling AI demand with consumer kit.
Nvidia thinks that it would be a wizard wheeze to make more of yesterday’s silicon. Korean outlet Hankyung says Samsung Foundry intends to spin the RTX 3060 lineup again, which would ease availability without waiting for fresher parts.
Samsung Foundry was a key Nvidia supplier for Ampere in 2021, providing the 8nm process used for those launches. Samsung’s 8nm lines have not exactly been gathering dust either, with Nvidia orders linked to Tegra SoCs for the Nintendo Switch 2.
That makes an Ampere ramp look straightforward, and it gives Nvidia a way to blunt shortages without pretending that every buyer needs a brand-new badge.
The RTX 5000 series, and AMD’s 9000 range, for the most part, have been a letdown on VRAM. In 2024, it was estimated that card partners were seeing Nvidia and AMD paying about $2 per 1GB die, $4 per 2GB and $16 per 3GB, with 2GB the common option.
By that maths, a 16GB card might be carrying roughly $32 of VRAM dies, depending on layout and architecture. Those costs did not remain politely contained, and board partners were squeezed harder once GPU chips were in the mix.
The RTX 5000 stack has looked particularly grim at the low-memory end, with 8GB parts, a 12GB 5070 and a 16GB 5080 feeling stingy for the money. Generational uplift has been thin, VRAM has been thin and modern features keep chewing memory like it is free.
Turn on frame generation, crank resolution, chase higher fps and load heavier assets, and the buffer vanishes fast. Some games are already pushing past 16GB, and the next wave is lining up with GTA6 waiting to guzzle whatever you have left.
