Private 5G spending heads for $84.7 billion

Global spending on private LTE and 5G networks will hit $84.7 billion by 2031 as enterprises wire up AI and industrial systems.

According to Juniper Research, spending will rise from $17.3 billion in 2026, representing nearly 400 per cent growth in five years.

The research outfit says private networks are increasingly the preferred way to provide the reliable connectivity AI systems require as they spread through business operations.

It recommends that private LTE and 5G suppliers cosy up to enterprise AI vendors and pitch private networks as part of broader AI modernisation projects. In other words, flogging connectivity alone is unlikely to cut it once every corporate IT project has acquired an AI sticker.

Juniper’s Private LTE & 5G Networks Market 2026-2031 study found that the strongest suppliers are moving away from generic enterprise networking and towards systems tailored to particular industries. Its 2026 Competitor Leaderboard placed Nokia first, followed by Huawei, Samsung, HPE and Ericsson.

Juniper Research vice-president of research Nick Maynard said suppliers will increasingly have to demonstrate that their networks can handle industrial workloads rather than merely producing impressive throughput numbers.

Maynard said: “The dominant providers will differentiate through proven Industry 4.0, operational technology, and mission-critical applications, such as Automated Guided Vehicles, machine vision, predictive maintenance, and industrial control operations. As these use cases become key to enterprise deployments, network performance in itself will be insufficient as a differentiator. Providers must therefore develop architecture that is repeatable, but highly tailored to individual sectors.”

That pushes private networks further into factories, warehouses and other operational environments where downtime tends to irritate people considerably more than a dropped video call. Automated guided vehicles, machine vision, predictive maintenance and industrial control are among the areas Juniper expects to drive deployments.

The growing role of AI is adding another reason for enterprises to demand predictable latency, capacity and availability from their networks rather than relying entirely on public mobile infrastructure.

Juniper’s research suite contains forecasts covering 98,500 data points across five years and evaluates 13 leading private LTE and 5G network suppliers.
