Rockstar’s GTA nearly cooked after 13 year wait

Rockstar’s long road to GTA VI involved competing projects, an uncertain early direction and a determination to avoid another punishing development crunch.

According to The Verge and GamesRadar+, the scheduled 19 November 2026 release will arrive 4,811 days after GTA V, a 13-year, 2-month, 2-day gap. That exceeds the 4,348 days separating GTA III and GTA V, giving fans plenty of time to get mortgages and develop lower back pain.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier says Rockstar initially hoped to develop GTA VI and Red Dead Redemption 2 roughly alongside each other. That ambition became impractical as the western’s demands grew, prompting Rockstar to move most of its development resources onto RDR2.

The decision helped deliver its extraordinarily detailed open world, while pushing substantial work on the next Grand Theft Auto into 2019. Schreier reports that the project then spent its first three or four years without an entirely settled overall vision.

Rob Nelson, Aaron Garbut, and Phil Hooker shared the head of development title, an arrangement reportedly tied to indecision among staff.

One persistent question concerned how much of Red Dead Redemption 2’s realism belonged in a game built around modern criminal chaos. There is presumably a point where painstaking simulation interferes with stealing a sports car and launching it through somebody’s conservatory.

Those early development years coincided with the pandemic, adding disruption to an already complicated production involving a vast workforce. A more cohesive direction reportedly emerged around 2022, followed by the first trailer in 2023, although individual features still required substantial work.

The attention to detail extends to a sweat system that adjusts perspiration according to how much physical effort characters expend.

According to Schreier, Jason, Lucia, and other characters can therefore become sweatier when dancing harder in a nightclub. Players have waited more than a decade, but at least their fictional criminals will suffer appropriately damp evenings out.

Rockstar wanted to avoid repeating the severe crunch associated with Red Dead Redemption 2, so it introduced more rigorous scheduling for the new project. Its workforce nearly doubled, rising from 2,441 employees in 2018 to 4,711 by August 2026, expanding development resources.

The company expects the engine and production tools built for GTA VI to help accelerate future projects. GTA VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November, according to Rockstar’s official website. An early-2027 PC release remains a rumour, with Rockstar yet to announce an official launch date for that version.
