Two new Reddit reports claim Ryzen 7 9800X3D chips have died within days of each other, both on high-end Asus X870E motherboards.
One case is a bit fuzzy on physical evidence, but the symptoms line up, and the owners ended up with the same bleak result.
The first report comes from u/rahfikirucku, who was using an Asus Crosshair X870E Hero, the sort of board that usually laughs at anything less than a lab accident. After a few hours of Arc Raiders, the PC froze solid, rebooted, then threw the dreaded “00” Q-CODE, indicating a critical CPU failure.
The user posted a photo of the chip with no obvious scorching or bulging, yet a replacement CPU reportedly worked fine in the same system. That makes the original 9800X3D look less like a “mystery issue” and more like “properly dead”.
The second report is even uglier, because it comes with outside confirmation and a bigger claim attached. A user running an Asus ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming board says their 9800X3D died after nearly a year, and their post was titled “9800X3D dead after a year”.
They took the chip to a repair shop, which allegedly confirmed it was dead and claimed it had seen more than 20 similar cases. The owner said they were on a five-month-old BIOS and had no warning signs, then the board hit “00”, and it was goodnight Vienna.
The broader chatter is that these 9800X3D failures are cropping up so often that they risk outshouting Troubled Chipzilla’s 13th- and 14th-gen instability saga, which is not a contest anyone should be winning. AMD and motherboard vendors may be replacing parts, but the root cause is still unknown.
