Samsung has started mass production of its PM1763 PCIe 6.0 SSD, aimed squarely at next-generation AI and HPC servers.
The company said in a statement that the enterprise SSD is optimised for next-generation AI and high-performance computing server environments, where shuffling data quickly is becoming less optional and more about survival.
Samsung is pitching the PM1763 at AI platforms such as Nvidia’s Vera Rubin, where processors and accelerators need storage. As AI training and inference chew through larger volumes of data, enterprise SSDs need to deliver information quickly and reliably.
The PM1763 uses Samsung’s 9th-generation V-NAND and a newly developed 4nm controller. Samsung claims the combination improves both performance and power efficiency.
The drive is available in 4TB, 8TB and 16TB capacities. The 16TB model delivers sequential read speeds of up to 28,400MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 21,900MB/s.
That is more than twice the performance of its predecessor, the PM1753, according to Samsung. It means the drive can transfer a 40GB large language model in about 1.4 seconds.
Samsung reckons that speed can help reduce data latency between processors and accelerators. In AI server land, that means fewer expensive chips sitting about waiting for data.
The PM1763 is designed for liquid-cooled server environments using direct-to-chip cooling technology. That should help it maintain peak performance under heavy workloads and prolonged operation.
Power efficiency is more than 1.8 times better than the PM1753, Samsung said. For data centre operators, that could mean lower running costs, assuming the rest of the AI circus does not eat the savings.
The drive’s arrival comes as AI infrastructure builders hunt for faster storage to feed increasingly hungry accelerators. CPUs and GPUs get the headlines, but storage bottlenecks can still make expensive systems look daft.
Samsung wants the PM1763 to become a key storage part for high-performance AI platforms. With PCIe 6.0, faster NAND and a new controller, it has the numbers to make server buyers pay attention.
The catch is that Samsung has not made this some cheap desktop toy for gamers with glowing cases, as this is an enterprise kit for AI and HPC servers.
