Tata and OpenAI hitch up

India wants to be an AI power, and the Tata Group has just dragged OpenAI into its cunning plans.

Tata Consultancy Services said on 19 February 2026 that it will team up with the maker of ChatGPT to build industry-specific AI services, help firms plug into OpenAI’s platforms worldwide, and spin up infrastructure in India for AI workloads.

The outfit said the first phase will deliver 100 megawatts of capacity, with an option to scale to one gigawatt, which is a fairly chunky bite of power for silicon dreams.

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran said: “This deep collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI,”

The tie-up lands days after Infosys said it is working with Anthropic to sell AI services into heavily regulated sectors like telecoms and financial services, where the paperwork is as thick as the budgets.

Adani Group also said it will invest $100 billion to develop large-scale data centres by 2035, while tech bosses and government types pile into New Delhi for a global AI summit aimed at giving emerging economies more sway.
