Google looks ready to stuff a 2021-era graphics block into a flagship chip.
The dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell-on-earth yarn claiming that the upcoming Tensor G6 will use the PowerVR CXT-48-1536 GPU, a part that debuted in 2021.
A few months ago, we had a go at Google for packing Tensor G5 with ageing Arm CPU cores. Recent leaks suggest it will at least switch to Arm C1 Ultra and C1 Pro cores for Tensor G6, with the lone big core clocked at 4.11GHz.
Even that comes with a sting, because Tensor G6 appears to drop from an octa-core layout to seven cores in a 1+4+2 setup. It looks like a cost-driven haircut.
The GPU rumour comes from a contributor to the Mystic Leaks Telegram channel, cited by Android Authority. The idea seems to be keeping die size tight, then leaning on the NPU to carry the AI workload and distract from weaker graphics.
Google will like the margins if this is true, especially with DRAM costs still creeping upwards.
There is one sweetener, with the chip expected to ship alongside the new Titan M3 security chip. Titan-class coprocessors handle hardware-level protection for user data, including encryption keys and biometric information.
