Trump wants 6G in time for LA 2028

The standards bodies behind the 6G timetable are still pointing at a 2030 launch for the next generation of wireless, but the Trump administration wants service ready for the Los Angeles Olympics in summer 2028.

Phone Arena claims the administration wants three commercial devices ready in time for the next running of the summer games, even if the rest of the planet is still arguing about the specs.

Qualcomm’s SVP of global government affairs and public affairs, Nate Tibbits, said at a Politico event that the 6G timeline is accelerating significantly.

Qualcomm, SVP of global government affairs and public affairs Nate Tibbits said, “The U.S. government is very interested [in 6G], they have asked us to work so it will launch in 2029 with three commercial devices ready to go for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.”

Leaning on Qualcomm suggests the White House wants the US out front on 6G, and Trump has been banging on about it since his first term.

In February 2019, Trump tweeted that 6G should arrive as soon as possible, calling it faster, smarter and more powerful than 5G.

He added that there was no reason for America and American companies to lag behind in the next generation of wireless, a familiar line even though the standards are not yet ready.

In December 2025, Trump signed a presidential memorandum calling for the US to lead in the development and use of 6G.

It orders federal systems to clear the 7.125-7.4 GHz band, pitched as the 6G-era equivalent of the C-band, for use by full-power commercial 6G.

Agencies using those airwaves have 12 months to file relocation plans intended to protect national security while clearing spectrum for commercial use.

Other frequencies being looked at include 2.69-2.9 GHz and 4.4-4.94 GHz, which is a lot of spectrum wrangling for something still years from a proper global spec.

The memorandum urges US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to advance American leadership in 6G through diplomacy, because nothing says “radio engineering” like geopolitics.

Even with Trump’s enthusiasm, delivering three genuine 6G phones by 2028 looks brutal, particularly if the global standards are not baked by then.

One report reckons 2028 could bring a 5G handset with 5G Advanced dressed up as 6G cosplay, loudly marketed as a history-making kit.
