Might not be powered by NVIDIA after all

Developers have been whispering to us that the Nintendo 3DS is far more powerful than the Wii.  The notion that the 3DS is more powerful than the Wii sounds crazy, but it might not be as crazy as you think when you consider than the vast majority of the technology in the Wii comes from the Game Cube.

What sounds really insane to us is the notion that the 3DS’s power and ability are closer to that of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Of course, if you are going to create titles that are going to be in 3D you need some power to do that; and while the suggestion that it might have the power of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 isn’t likely a valid comparison, the concept is of what is being suggested is a portable with far more power than we have seen before.

Previously, it has been suggested and even reported that NVIDIA had a deal with the giant N to provide the hardware that would make up the 3DS, but now we are hearing that the Tegra isn’t going to be found under the hood of the 3DS. Instead, Nintendo is said to have done a deal with a new partner who will provide technology that will be used in the new unit. NVIDIA is said to be out and someone who we don’t apparently know yet is in. Of course, Nintendo isn’t talking as is their custom, but we do think we will learn who is in and what is in at E3. We have to think that it would be difficult for Nintendo to make a switch like this so late in the game, but don’t count NVIDIA out just yet.
