Sony to use PSN Pass voucher

by on29 August 2011

Resistance 3 to be the first to have it
It seems that Electronic Art’s project ten dollar just keeps rolling along with additional publishers joining in. As rumored, Sony has elected to use what they are calling a PSN Pass voucher that will be inside some new titles at purchase; but as is the norm with these things, it restricts access to online play to those that have the PSN Pass voucher that comes with the game or those that purchase access from the PlayStation Network Store.

As rumored, the first title to use the PSN Pass voucher will be the Sony release of Resistance 3 when it arrives on September 6th in North America and September 9th in Europe. Sony has not said much about the selection of Resistance 3 as the first to use the PSN Pass voucher, and we don’t expect them to comment on it.

As with most software publishers, this strategy has more to do with curbing the sale of used games. Despite the efforts of publishers to deploy this strategy, it does not seem to have had much effect on the used game market. The prices are a little lower for these titles in some cases, and unless the game has a heavy online component many who are buying simply play the single player mode and never get into the online play; maybe if they really like it, they break down and purchase the access to the online play.

As we have told you recently in other stories, don’t expect this to go away and look for publishers to try even more aggressive strategies to curb used sales. In addition, as we have seen with the introduction of the EA Sports Season Pass, publishers are trying other new ways to generate additional revenue and experimenting to see what gamers want and what they are willing to spend.
