Two discs for 360 & PC version of BF3

by on08 September 2011

PS3 version, of course, on a single Blu-ray disc
While the rumors have been circulating for some time about the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 to be released on two discs, our sources tell us that the same will go for the PC version. The PlayStation 3 version will, naturally, be released on a single Blu-ray disc.

The Xbox 360 and PC use the DVD disc format which has significantly less available space than a Blu-ray disc. The problem isn’t a new one for the Xbox 360, as developers have been dealing with the capacity issues for a long time. Microsoft recently has tried to help the situation through a recent update which introduces a new disc format that increases the amount of space available to developers for game data by almost 1GB.

As for PC users, most could care less; as despite the fact that the game will ship on two discs, PC titles are installed to the hard drive, so actually it really does not matter that much, with the exception that it takes longer to install from disc or download if you are going with the downloadable version of the game.

There is no word yet on how DICE is planning on handling the situation on the Xbox 360 with two discs, but we suspect that many players will simply install the entire game to their hard drives. With a good number of users having a 250GB hard drive these days, Xbox 360 users are not as pressed for hard drive space as they once were.

In fact, recently Microsoft announced 320GB hard drives that would be shipping in the Limited Edition Xbox 360 consoles that are being released. Microsoft has not announced any plans to make the 320GB drive available separately, but sources tell us that it is possible in the future. With the amount of downloadable content and game installations, many Xbox 360 users would welcome the ability to add additional storage space.
