AMD selling MXM GPUs to miners

At the right quality and price

There is no doubt that AMD GPU profits are coming from bitcoin miners and AMD is taking advantage of this sudden interest.

AMD competes on a price performance ratio rather well against Nvidia, but  Nvidia takes the performance lead, especially at the high end. But this is less important for the miners of Bitcoin / Litecoin / Ethereum as all they care is the hash rate at the right power level.

Electricity (power) costs money so the secret sauce is to get the best performance with least possible energy.  Radeon RX 480, 470, 580 and 570 are currently the best for mining, closely followed by Nvidia’s Geforce 1060 3GB.

Our industry sources confirmed that AMD is selling MXM cards directly to miners. Usually the MXM Mobile PCI Express Module is reserved for laptops, but apparently it can to go miners too.

The MXM-B has 82mm width and 105mm length, supports 256-bit memory as well as 200W TDP. In other words, it can accommodate almost anything.

Miners can plug a bunch of these MXM GPUs in a board and have  an efficient mining platform. The MXM GPU from AMD has to be cheaper than anything you can get from Add in board partners or distributors.

We have learned that distributors are making quite high mark-up resulting from an insane demand. It will be interesting to see the end of this high demand for mining market as AMD is about to introduce the Vega GPUs in four days time.

Vega on the other hand, just like any high-end GPU, might not have the greatest power to hash rate ratio, but this is something that we will have to wait and see.

In the meantime, the GPU guys inside of AMD are enjoying the market attention and making some serious money in the meantime.
