Software King of the World, Microsoft has climbed down from plans to stuff Teams meetings with AI tools after users gave the idea a kicking.
In recent weeks, Microsoft revealed several AI-powered Teams features which it claimed would boost productivity and efficiency. These included catch-up tools, note-taking and translation, because apparently every meeting now needs a robot lurking in the corner.
According to Windows Latest there was shedloads of fightback from users, and Vole said it will offer a simple toggle to turn off its “Meeting AI” features during calls.
The news appeared in an admin centre post, which seemed to admit Microsoft might have got a bit carried away with its AI fantasies.
The statement said: “Microsoft Teams will add an in-meeting toggle for licensed organisers and presenters to turn Meeting AI (Copilot, Facilitator, recap) on or off during live meetings. Rollout starts early July 2026, with no changes to existing compliance or licensing requirements.”
Microsoft showed what the feature might look like inside a Teams meeting. A screenshot showed a toggle to switch off Copilot, Facilitator and Intelligent recap separately, or kill the whole lot at once.
The company said its Meeting AI tools will only appear after admins clear them. Specific policy settings will still apply, and the toggle will not show if Meeting AI has been turned off by policy.
The move follows Microsoft’s reveal of Facilitator, a new AI-powered tool designed to manage Teams calls. It is supposed to fill in knowledge gaps during meetings, which sounds handy until the software starts behaving like an overexcited intern.
Some observers have already raised concerns about the tool’s privacy and security limits. Microsoft said Facilitator will need to be activated so it can listen to and watch meetings, giving it the chance to decide when to interfere and chip in.
The toggle is rolling out now and should be complete by mid-July 2026. Teams users on Windows, macOS, mobile and web are included.
